Which Type of Smoke Alarm Should You Install?
The two most commonly used smoke detection technologies used are ionization and photoelectric smoke detection. Ionization is the most common type of smoke detector and is sensitive to fires which are flaming and grow rapidly. Photoelectric models are more sensitive to smoking fires.
For best protection, a smoke detector with both technologies should be used in your home. At Southwest Florida Electric Inc., we recommend and install the highest quality smoke detectors to best protect your home from danger.
Smoke Detector Maintenance & Testing
In order to ensure your smoke detector works when it needs to, you should follow these steps and precautions:
- Maintain your smoke alarm according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Smoke alarms should be tested once a month by pressing the test button.
- If your smoke alarm uses a 10-year battery and the battery is low, the smoke alarm will chirp, meaning it’s time to replace your smoke alarm.
- If your smoke alarm uses a different type of battery, the battery should be replaced once a year.
